Hamilton had just gotten out of his car to celebrate his 91st Formula 1 victory. He appeared in front of the cameras to tell his story when Mick Schumacher – the son of racing legend Michael Schumacher – suddenly appeared on the screen.
The young Schumacher congratulated Hamilton on his victory and handed the Mercedes driver the red helmet his father used to drive in his last years at Mercedes. “Congratulations. A great achievement ”, said Schumacher, who overwhelmed Hamilton a bit with the present. “What an honor. Thank you so much. I appreciate this greatly.” Then an emotional Hamilton proudly presented the helmet of the German driver to the spectators present.
“Growing up, I looked up to someone who was so good that he dominated every race with his team year after year,” Hamilton said of Schumacher. “He was my idol. When I just entered the pit lane, I realized I had matched his record. ”
Not satisfied yet
Hamilton is not yet satisfied. “The job is not done yet. I think and hope to improve and set even more records ”, said the winner after his victory at the Nürburgring.
Hamilton has already won seven of the eleven races this year and with 69 points ahead it is almost certain that he will conquer his seventh world title this year. Then he also comes on a par with legend Schumacher.
With 96 pole positions and 158 podium places, he is better than the German (68 poles and 155 podiums), who has not appeared in public since his skiing accident at the end of 2013.
“I will certainly take the time to let it sink in and give it a place in the coming days, but I cannot do that for too long,” said Hamilton.
“I have a big lead in points and now have that huge series of victories, but the championship is not yet in and I just don’t want to relax. ”
