Ivermectin is mainly used in the prevention or treatment of parasites in animals. The FDA has received several reports of patients requiring medical attention and hospitalization after taking ivermectin intended for horses. .
The FDA reiterates that ivermectin is not approved to treat or prevent Covid-19 in humans, although research is underway.
The drug is already used by people, but in very specific doses to combat parasitic worms or – externally – to treat head lice or certain skin conditions, such as scabies. “Ivermectin is not a virus treatment.”
Medication for animals contains a different dosage of the active substances and can therefore be dangerous. “Never self-medicate for animals,” is the warning from the FDA.
In March of this year, the Health and Youth Care Inspectorate (IGJ) started an investigation in our country into a group of general practitioners who, despite previous warnings, continued to prescribe the drug, just like another drug whose effect has not been proven, the antimalarial hydroxychloroquine.
