Two more minors in jail for fatal assault 73-year-old man | NOW

Two more minors have been arrested who are suspected of being involved in the fatal assault of a 73-year-old man in Arnhem on Wednesday, police reported Friday. Four minors and an eighteen-year-old boy were already arrested earlier.

It concerns two underage boys. One of them was arrested on Thursday evening, the other on Friday. They had reported themselves to the police.

One person of the five previously arrested youngsters has since been sent, a minor boy from Westervoort. He is no longer seen as a suspect in this case.

In total there are now six boys in prison for involvement in the abuse. Three of them will be brought before the examining magistrate on Friday, the three others will be decided this weekend whether they should remain in prison and should be brought to trial.

The victim was attacked on Wednesday around 9.15 pm in the Spijkerkwartier in Arnhem by five people, who then fled. The man died in hospital a few hours later.

Little is known about the possible cause of the abuse. The police is still conducting an extensive investigation into this and will not make any statements until that has been completed.

Mayor Ahmed Marcouch van Arnhem called the fatal assault on Thursday “a horrible, monstrous crime that has a major impact on Arnhem society”. At the place where the abuse took place, local residents put flowers and candles are lit.
