The Top 2000 started eight hours earlier than usual in the night from Thursday to Friday from an almost empty Top 2000 Café in Sound and Vision in Hilversum. Due to the corona crisis, the cafe is not open to visitors this year.
It is possible for listeners to be virtually present in the Top 2000 Café. To this end, there are several screens in the café, on which listeners can be seen via the video calling service Zoom.
This year, the Top 2000 did not open on Christmas Day at 08:00, but already at midnight. According to the organization, that is a “good starting moment”. In addition, the eight hours extra airtime offers more space for album versions of certain songs that last just a little longer than the single variants, Radio 2 channel boss Peter de Vries said earlier.
Radio 2 DJ Bart Arens kicked off the Top 2000 on NPO Radio 2 with a mix of songs just after midnight. The mix, which lasted six minutes, was recorded in an empty Ziggo Dome this year. Arens played a piano in the middle of the concert hall in Amsterdam. In the background, images of healthcare workers treating corona patients were shown.
The music list started with the number 2000 on the list, Can’t get it out of my head from Electric Light Orchestra. Danny Vera closes with his Roller Coaster the list. Bohemian Rhapsody Queen, which was number one seventeen times, is now in second place.
