Formula 1 announced the introduction of sprint qualifications on Monday. These are races over 100 kilometers that will be completed on Saturday and determine the starting order for the grand prix on Sunday. The top three in the sprint race will receive points for the world championship. The starting order of the sprint race on Saturday will be determined in a qualifying race on Friday, which replaces the second free practice.
Three sprint qualifications are planned for this season. Silverstone is the first, the other two are not yet known. The Grand Prix of Italy (September 12) and Brazil (November 7) would be the main candidates.
“We have not seen such a big change in race format in the sport for years and I appreciate the efforts of Formula 1 and the FIA International Motorsport Federation to increase the entertainment on the circuits,” said Pringle, who added apparently assumes that plenty of spectators will be welcome again in July. “The tickets for Sunday are almost sold out and now Saturday presents itself as a great opportunity for fans to see a Formula 1 race at Silverstone.”
