The East in May on Amazon Prime, creators also hope for cinema screening | NOW

The East, a film about the Indonesian Independence Struggle in 1946, can be seen from 13 May on Amazon Prime. The film will also run in theaters when they reopen by then.

Members of the streaming service do not have to pay an additional amount to watch the movie.

“I’m glad Amazon Prime Video didn’t just help The East but also helped by contributing to these uncertain times for cinemas, “said director Jim Taihuttu.” I am very much looking forward to the development of the combination of author films and streaming services in the coming years. “

The film, with Golden Calf winners Marwan Kenzari (Wolf, Aladdin) and Martijn Lakemeier (War winter) as protagonists, was previously the topic of conversation. The Federation of Dutch Indies (FIN) fears that the film gives an incorrect and one-sided picture of the situation in the Dutch East Indies, the former Dutch colony.

The FIN wanted to overcome this problem with the help of a disclaimer, but according to producer Sander Verdonk, this will not be forthcoming.

The trailer for the film in particular led to a lot of criticism. In it, Dutch soldiers wear black uniforms, KNIL captain Raymond Westerling has a mustache and gothic letters are used. All these elements are said to be reminiscent of Nazi Germany.

The East is set in 1946 and tells the story of Johan (Lakemeier), a young Dutch soldier who, together with a hundred thousand others, is sent to put things in order in the Dutch East Indies.

Johan gradually falls under the spell of Westerling (Kenzari), a charismatic army captain. When the war escalates and Westerling beats down the resistance of the population more and more mercilessly, the boundary between good and evil becomes increasingly blurred for Johan.
