The Crown wins four Golden Globes, Netflix big winner | NOW

The Crown on Sunday night (Dutch time) cashed in four of the six nominations during the presentation of the Golden Globes, including that for best drama series. The presentation took place at two different locations: presenter Tina Fey was in New York, colleague Amy Poehler in Los Angeles.

Streaming service Netflix, where the series about the British royal family can be seen, is the biggest winner of the evening with ten prizes. In addition to ‘Charles and Diana’ aka Josh O’Connor and Emma Corrin, Gillian Anderson also won a Golden Globe for her performance as Margaret Thatcher, as Best Supporting Actress.

Nomadland won the Golden Globe for best drama film. Borat Subsequent Movie Film is the best film in the best musical or comedy category.

The Danish-Dutch film Another Round, co-produced by the Dutch Topkapi Films, had a chance to win the frame for best foreign film, but did not win it. The prize went to Minari, about a Korean family who moves to the US state of Arkansas.

The Golden Globes ceremony is normally scheduled for January, but the event was postponed due to the corona virus. Because many cinemas are or have been closed, it is not mandatory this time for a film to have a premiere on the silver screen. Films that were immediately released on streaming services can also compete. This rule is also applied at the presentation of the Oscars on April 25.

Criticism of lack of diversity in the organization

On Friday, the Time’s Up movement launched a campaign critical of the Golden Globes’ lack of diversity. The jury consists of 87 members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFP) and has no black members.

Presenter Tina Fey said that “we all know that awards are stupid. But even when things are stupid, inclusivity is important and there are no black members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. HFP, maybe you didn’t get the memo, but this needs to change” .

The winners of the Golden Globes were diverse this year. Andra Ray won Best Actress for her performance in The United States vs. Billie Holiday. Chadwick Boseman was posthumously awarded the Best Actor award for his performance in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. The Chinese-American ChloĆ© Zhao won the Golden Globe for best direction for her film Nomadland and was thus the first woman of color to win the award.

Limited public presence due to corona crisis

A limited audience was present at both locations of the Golden Globes on Sunday. For example, frontline workers and employees of the food bank were invited to the ceremonies and stars who hand out the prizes sat in the room. The winners did not personally receive their statuette.

The Golden Globes were awarded for the 78th time on Sunday. The awards are awards for achievements in the field of film and television. The Globes for films have been awarded since 1944. Those for television series since 1956.

In 2017, the Dutch director Paul Verhoeven won with the French film Elle a Golden Globe for best foreign film.
