Slight increase in the number of social assistance recipients in 2020, Rotterdam leads the list | NOW

The number of social assistance recipients rose in the first half of last year to 28 in every 1,000 inhabitants. This is evident from figures from the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) on Thursday.

With 28 welfare recipients per 1,000 inhabitants, the so-called welfare density has increased slightly compared to a year earlier. Nevertheless, the density is still below the level of 2017, when the recession was felt as a result of the credit crisis.

The slightly increased welfare density in 2020 is entirely due to men. In this group, the social assistance density increased from 23.6 in 2019 to 24.4, while for women there was a decrease from 31.6 to 31.5 in 2020.

At the reference moment at the end of June 2020, in eight Dutch municipalities there were at least fifty welfare recipients per thousand inhabitants.

In addition to the major cities of Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague, these were Arnhem, Enschede, Groningen, Heerlen and Leeuwarden. The social assistance density was the highest with 68 social assistance recipients per 1,000 inhabitants in Rotterdam.
