With a time of 54.713, Russell was slightly more than a tenth of a second faster than Max Verstappen, who had also set the second time in the first practice. Sergio Pérez recorded third fastest shortly after.
Russels temporary teammate Valtteri Bottas only set the eleventh fastest time, six tenths behind the fastest man. Bottas was a lap faster than Russell, but that time was removed for exceeding the track limit in Turn 8, a common problem. In the second part, Bottas, just like his colleagues, focused on the race simulation and did not set a fast time anymore.
Ferrari had a crappy second practice. Charles Leclerc did not set a timed lap at all due to a driveshaft problem. His teammate Sebastian Vettel spun twice at the start of the session and eventually only set the sixteenth fastest time. McLaren driver Lando Norris (seventeenth) had problems with his Renault engine.
