Romain Grosjean surprises and takes pole in IndyCar

The 35-year-old Frenchman was the fastest in qualifying for the GMR Grand Prix in Indianapolis. Rinus van Kalmthout will start from seventh place on Saturday.

Grosjean said goodbye to Formula 1 last year after nine seasons and 179 races. He drove his last year with the American team Haas. The Frenchman retired prematurely after a serious crash in the Bahrain Grand Prix, in which he saved himself from his burning car wreck. Due to burns to his hands, he was unable to drive the last races of the season.

It had been a long time since Grosjean took pole position. The last time was ten years ago, in GP2. In Formula 1 he never managed to conquer the first starting position. On Friday (local time) at the Indianapolis circuit in his Honda of the Dale Coyne Racing team, he set the best time of 1.09.4396 and was a fraction faster than the American Josef Newgarden.
