On Sunday, the RIVM reported 9,108 positive corona tests, less than the average of the past seven days (11,083). The average number of positive tests fell for the fourth day in a row on Sunday.
The average rose to nearly 12,000 positive tests per day this week, after several 12 to 13,000 positive tests were reported last week. However, a decline started from Wednesday, because the daily figures are slightly lower this week.
NU.nl looks at the average of the seven previous days because daily figures can fluctuate greatly: this Saturday more than fifteen hundred infections were reported less than on Friday. By looking at one week, a better picture is given of the number of corona infections in the Netherlands. RIVM also recommended several times to keep an eye on weekly figures.
There may have been fewer positive tests this weekend because they overlapped with Christmas and Boxing Day. It is not yet clear whether people tested themselves as much as normal during Christmas.
29 corona-related deaths were reported Sunday, 20 fewer than Saturday (49). The number of corona-related deaths is increasing at a relatively rapid rate: in the last five days, about 430 people died with COVID-19.
