RIVM reports 6,093 positive tests, again less than average (6,166) | NOW

The RIVM reports 6,093 new positive corona tests on Thursday. That is slightly less than the average in the seven past days (6,166).

NU.nl looks at the average of the past seven days, because this gives a better picture than the fluctuating daily figures. This average has been falling for several weeks.

Averages for the past week

  • Friday, January 15: 6,166
  • Thursday, January 14: 6,457
  • Wednesday, January 13: 6,906
  • Tuesday, January 12: 7,046
  • Monday, January 11: 7,250
  • Sunday, January 10: 7,418
  • Saturday, January 9: 7,532

The institute also reports 96 new corona-related deaths. This does not necessarily mean that these people actually died in the past 24 hours. There may be a delay between the date of death and the date of notification.

Weekly figures show ‘first effect’ of lockdown

The RIVM announced on Tuesday that the figures show a “first effect” of the lockdown introduced on December 15. The number of positive tests in seven days was smaller compared to a week earlier, as was the number of corona patients in the hospitals. In addition, the percentage of people who tested positive decreased from 13.7 to 12.8.

Although a cautious decline is visible, according to the RIVM this decline is not yet strong enough. The cabinet agrees. The lockdown in the Netherlands has therefore been extended by three weeks until February 9, it was announced on Tuesday evening.

Disclaimer: Until now NU.nl calculated the average number of infections by using the daily figures of the seven previous days. This turned out to be confusing, so we adjusted our calculation. From now on NU.nl will work with the figures for this day and the six previous days, in order to arrive at a weekly average.
