Relegated Alexander Albon: ‘It went better, but it was too late’

Albon is this year’s reserve and test driver at Red Bull, where the seat next to Max Verstappen has been taken by Sergio Pérez. All other places in Formula 1 had already been filled after that decision. “The team wanted to see how the year would go, which is why they were late with their decision,” said Albon, who was put forward by Red Bull on Monday to provide text and explanation. “I thought it was getting better, but it was too late. My best race of the season was the last one in Abu Dhabi, I think. ”

The driver will also drive some DTM races in 2021. He assures Red Bull that he will not blame anything, but the announcement in December came like a blow. “Of course I was disappointed. It’s no secret that it was a tough year in a tough car. Red Bull has a total of four seats, but I also understand that AlphaTauri has chosen Yuki Tsunoda. What more can I say about it? It’s not my decision. I have seen such a situation before in my racing career. I am confident that I can come back. ”

Albon (24) has not yet given up hope for a definitive return to Formula 1, he says. “I am determined to get a seat back. This year I have to contribute in the tests, in the factory and on the simulator. And you never know what can happen, especially with the corona virus. I have to make sure I am ready if necessary. ”
