The World Cup leader was of course very happy with that. “It’s hard to overtake here. Fortunately we had a good start, it was a nice fight with Lewis on the first lap,” he refers to competitor Hamilton, whom he passed directly towards the first corner. “You can see we were really pushing because we had blistering on the tyres. Going that fast through the fast corners is tough on the tires, but we have to deal with that.”
For Verstappen it was his fourth pole position in a row, although it still felt a bit crazy to force that first starting position in this way.
“It sounds a bit strange, but I also think that we will also see a nice fight tomorrow,” predicts Verstappen. “We are fast in the corners, hopefully tomorrow too. Due to the different setup this weekend, we were not allowed to adjust much to the car after the first practice on Friday. The difference in speed on the straight compared to Mercedes is there, that will be tricky for us. But I still think we can have a strong race.”
