Mercedes drivers Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton were faster than the Dutchman. Bottas went around the Paul Ricard circuit in 1.33.448. Hamilton followed more than three tenths of his Finnish teammate, Verstappen followed just under one tenth of the seven-time world champion.
Verstappen was initially not satisfied during the first session in the warm Le Castellet. He complained, among other things, about a problem with submission. After an adjustment to the front wing, he broke off a fast lap as he ran hard over the kerbstones and appeared to damage the floor of his RB16B somewhat. In the final phase of the training, the top drivers no longer focused on fast laps on the softest tire.
Unlike the race weekends on the street circuits of Monaco and Baku, Ferrari now lagged behind. Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz did not get further than the eleventh and sixteenth time respectively.
