Max Verstappen is looking forward to working with Sergio Pérez

De Limburger is complimentary about the Mexican (30), who replaces Alexander Albon. “Checo is a good, intelligent racer ”, says Verstappen. “He has had a great season, with a good car of course, and brings a little more experience to the team. I look forward to working with him. I’m sure we can get along well. ”

Preference for Hülkenberg

Verstappen confirms that he was previously asked for his opinion internally by the Red Bull top. Although he says nothing about it himself, it is clear that the Dutchman then indicated a preference for the transfer-free Nico Hülkenberg.

However, that does not mean that Verstappen does not agree with this choice. “Of course we talked about it and I gave my opinion. Ultimately, Helmut Marko, Christian Horner and Dietrich Mateschitz make the decision. It was clear that for Alex it was one tricky years. He’s a great guy and I’m glad he’s still part of the team. ”

Greater challenger

After all, Albon will stay on as a reserve and test driver. With Pérez on board, Verstappen hopes that Red Bull will become a bigger challenger for Mercedes in 2021. “This year I was often the only one in the vicinity of Mercedes. Then they could always choose a different strategy, because they had an extra car to accommodate me. It would be great if Pérez could help our team further. And push me as a teammate. Hopefully we will have a competitive car from the start of next season and we can make it a bit more difficult for Mercedes. ”
