On the softest tire, Verstappen came to a time of 54.064 on Saturday afternoon. He was two tenths of a second faster than Valtteri Bottas. His temporary teammate at Mercedes, George Russell, did not get past seventh fastest this time. Lewis Hamilton’s replacement had been the fastest twice on Friday. Pierre Gasly (AlphaTauri) recorded the third fastest time, 3.5 tenths behind Verstappen.
Verstappen spun on the hardest tire at the start of training, but that had no consequences. He could immediately continue on his way. More problems were there for Sebastian Vettel, whose Ferrari engine is being replaced as a precaution towards qualifying. It starts on Saturday at 6 p.m. Dutch time.
Verstappen, Vettel, Carlos Sainz and Daniil Kvyat, among others, have previously expressed their concerns about the course of qualifying. Given the busyness on the short circuit, they expect a chaotic session.
