Max Verstappen after second time on smooth asphalt: ‘Very unfortunate’

Hamilton recorded a time of 1.19.837 on the softest tire. Verstappen admitted a small one and a half tenth to the seven-time world champion. Hamilton’s teammate Valtteri Bottas rode to the third fastest time. Sergio Pérez, Verstappen’s companion, set the tenth fastest time.

“It was a difficult day because of the slippery asphalt”, said Verstappen. This was also the case in Portugal last season, when new asphalt had just been laid. “It is comparable to last year, but we have now changed tires and lost some grip due to the modification of the cars. It’s a shame it’s so difficult now because it’s a great job. Now it’s all about getting your tires up to temperature and it shouldn’t be. The car felt good, but of course we still have some work to do with a view to Saturday. ”

Hamilton also found the conditions difficult in Portimão, also because of the wind. As usual, the drivers concentrated on the long runs during the second part of Friday afternoon practice, with a view to Sunday’s race. Red Bull – who struggled with a problem with the braking system at the start of the training – and Mercedes did not differ much from each other.

Just like Saturday’s qualifying, the race starts at 4 p.m. Dutch time.
