After two races, Verstappen and Hamilton are barely inferior to each other. The Dutch Red Bull driver won the GP of Emilia-Romagna, the Mercedes world champion triumphed in Bahrain.

Because Hamilton (36) once drove the fastest race lap, the Briton is one point ahead of his thirteen years younger rival: 44 at 43. Both men have also started from pole once this season.

Verstappen did not have a flawless Friday on the Portuguese circuit. “It was a difficult day because of the slippery asphalt”, the Limburger concluded after the first two free practice sessions.

“That was also the case in Portugal last season, when new asphalt had just been laid. “It is similar to last year, but we have now changed tires and lost some grip due to the modification of the cars. It’s a shame it’s so difficult now because it’s a great job. Now it’s all about getting your tires up to temperature and it shouldn’t be. The car felt good, but of course we still have some work to do with a view to Saturday. ”

On that Saturday, Verstappen clocked the fastest time in the third free practice.

Hamilton also found the conditions in Portimão difficult, also because of the wind. As usual, the drivers concentrated on the long runs during the second part of Friday afternoon practice, with a view to Sunday’s race. Red Bull – which had a problem with the braking system at the start of the training – and Mercedes did not differ much from each other.
