“We probably could and should have stayed outside,” said Hamilton, who was flagged fifth at the wet Istanbul Park and had to relinquish the lead in the World Cup standings to Max Verstappen. Hamilton had already had a considerable discussion with the team about the on-board radio during the grand prix. “Why do I have to go in?” said the Briton, who was in third place, but fell back to fifth after his pit stop. Hamilton struggled with his new set of intermediate tires in the last seven laps. “I told you so,” shouted the defending champion angrily over the on-board radio.
“I don’t think it was a difficult decision at all, but it is what it is. We will learn from this,” said Hamilton at Ziggo Sports. “I listened because we work as a team and the team called me in. We lost two places because of the pit stop, maybe even more.”
Frenchman Esteban Ocon was the only driver to use the same tires for the entire race. The Alpine driver finished tenth. Verstappen was second behind Valtteri Bottas, Hamilton’s teammate.
