King Willem-Alexander, Queen Máxima and their daughters are back in the country. They arrived at Schiphol on a scheduled flight from KLM just after 8 p.m. on Saturday. Shortly after their arrival, the royal standard (flag) was hoisted at Huis ten Bosch Palace in The Hague, as a sign that the king is back in the Netherlands.
On Friday, Willem-Alexander announced through the Government Information Service (RVD) that he would abort his holiday to Greece after a fuss about this trip. In the afternoon it turned out that the royal family had left with the government plane to the country residence in Greece.
The RVD did not want to make any statements about the king’s holiday because it is a private matter. When asked, the service did say that the king adheres to the corona measures and the applicable travel advice.
However, the king’s holiday did not go well in the House of Representatives. From left to right, it was said to be unwise that the king should take a holiday in Greece, while the population is called upon to stay at home as much as possible in order to contain the corona outbreak. The criticism was also harsh on social media.
‘Reactions are intense, they affect us’
“We see people’s reactions to media reports. And they are intense, and they affect us,” said Willem-Alexander. “We do not want to leave any doubts about it: in order to get the COVID-19 virus under it, it is necessary that the guidelines are followed. The discussion during our holiday does not contribute to that.”
Prime Minister Mark Rutte was aware of the vacation plans of King Willem-Alexander, a spokesman for the RVD reported on Friday evening. Various groups want clarification from him.
King’s Greek holiday already discredited
It is not the first time that a holiday of Willem-Alexander and Máxima has been discredited. Earlier this year, they had their picture taken with a restaurant owner while on vacation in Greece. The royal couple did not keep a distance of 1.5 meters.
At the time, the royal couple were on holiday on the Greek island of Milos. Orange travel advice now applies to that island. The current holiday of the king would go to the Greek peninsula of Peloponnese. There is currently a yellow travel advice.
