Italy passes two million confirmed corona infections | NOW

Italy has passed the mark of two million confirmed coronavirus infections. Health authorities reported 18,040 new positive tests and 505 corona-related deaths on Thursday. Italy is now the eighth country on Earth to pass the two million confirmed corona cases.

The number of new cases is higher than Wednesday’s (15,522). In contrast, the death toll of 505 reported Thursday is slightly lower than Wednesday’s, when health services announced 553 deaths.

The total death toll in Italy now stands at 70,900. This is the highest death rate from COVID-19 in Europe and the fifth highest worldwide.

In the country, 24,070 people are currently in hospital, 476 fewer than the day before. 2,589 of these patients are in intensive care, 35 fewer than Wednesday.

After the first infections were detected in Italy at the end of February, the virus spread rapidly among the population. After a strict lockdown, things seemed to go well in the country for some time. Later, during the second wave in November, the virus started to spread strongly again. The number of hospital admissions increased by a thousand per day and the number of IC admissions by about a hundred per day.

The country is currently in lockdown again. Non-essential stores will be closed from December 24 to 27, December 31 to January 3 and January 5 and 6. On these dates, Italians are also allowed to travel alone for work, emergency or health reasons.
