Fernando Alonso (39) ready for return to Formula 1: ‘I’m at my best’

Alonso retired after 2018, then as a McLaren driver. He went on to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans and 24 Hours of Daytona and drove the Indy 500 and the Dakar Rally. Now he is back in the premier class of motorsport as a driver for Alpine, the former Renault that made him world champion twice.

“The main reason for my return is that last year I thought I was driving better than ever. I am at my best and I feel that I have something to do here in Formula 1, ”said Alonso in Bahrain, where his teammate Esteban Ocon will be responsible for the first day of testing.

“To eventually win races and possibly titles, you need more than just motivation. You need the whole package with the car and motorcycle, the momentum and some luck. We’re going to try to build Alpine in that direction. I cannot guarantee it, but we will fight for it. ”

Alonso underwent surgery in February after he suffered a broken jaw in a bicycle accident. He is now ready to fire in Formula 1, he assures. “After the operation I had to take it easy for about ten days, but then I got back to my normal routine. I feel fine and have been training for a few weeks now. I look forward to getting on Saturday. ”
