EU Member States Approve Preliminary Brexit Deal | NOW

Ambassadors of the member states of the European Union approved the preliminary version of the Brexit deal on Monday. This is a temporary approval until February 28, the spokesman for the German EU presidency reports Twitter. The agreement will take effect on January 1, 2021.

According to the spokesperson, the ambassadors have unanimously decided to give the provisional agreement the green light. The formal approval of the EU member states must follow on Tuesday afternoon.

The European Commission has proposed a provisional arrangement until February 28 to give the European Parliament time to thoroughly review the Brexit deal concluded on Thursday.

Parliament will not vote on it until the new year, while the British will leave the EU on January 1. The temporary arrangement should avoid unnecessary problems. The United Kingdom has yet to ratify the agreement itself. The British Parliament will meet for this on December 30.

On Thursday, after nine months of negotiations, an agreement was finally reached between the European Union and the United Kingdom. It lays down rules for trade between both parties.

It should ensure a smooth exit for the British from the EU. It is true that the UK left the EU on January 31, 2020, but there is still a transition period until 31 December.
