Daniel Ricciardo: ‘Max Verstappen did nothing strange or unique’

Ricciardo switched from Red Bull to Renault last year. From next season, the Australian will drive for McLaren. “The difference with his teammates is not due to the set-up of his car. I was able to drive that too, but the difference was not huge ”, Ricciardo said in an interview with the French L’Équipe. “Max didn’t do anything strange or unique. Perhaps the Red Bull is a bit more difficult to drive these days. I can only say that Max is an excellent driver. He really is one of the best. ”

“Of course I would have liked to finish that race”

The 31-year-old Ricciardo could sometimes beat Verstappen, in his own words because he had confidence in himself. Nevertheless, he also frequently lost against the Dutchman, certainly in his last Red Bull year (2018). “We should not underestimate Max. He’s that good. It’s not easy for young drivers like Pierre or Alex. You have to be quite resilient mentally to ride against Max. ”

Verstappen and Ricciardo still have an excellent relationship. Ricciardo laughs when asked about the 2018 Mexican Grand Prix when he snatched his teammate from his first pole position. A day later, an exasperated Verstappen did win the race.

‘Everything was against me’

“Of course I would have liked to finish that race”, said Ricciardo, who had problems with the clutch. “But it has been the most surprising pole of my career. Max dominated all practices, had already won the race the year before and I had never achieved good results there. And it was also known that I would leave Red Bull, so everything was against me. That pole was actually pure luck. ”
