Carlos Sainz: ‘I immediately saw that Max Verstappen was special’

“It was immediately clear in 2015 that Max was special, that he was extraordinarily talented,” said Sainz, who has been with Ferrari since this year, in an interview with the company. Corriere della Sera. “Because I could offer him a match, I got the confidence that I could continue in Formula 1. I knew that I was in the right place and that I could fight with anyone.”

It was sometimes hard between the two newcomers in that first year. Verstappen was promoted to flagship Red Bull Racing in 2016 after four races. Sainz said in conversation with De Telegraaf at the end of 2020: “We had a good relationship, but we were also in a competition and were two rookies who fought hard for our own chances. ”

After adventures at Renault and McLaren, Sainz now rides alongside Charles Leclerc at Ferrari. This weekend the second Grand Prix of the season awaits at the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari in Imola.

“Some people think we are too young for Ferrari, but I am 26 years old and in my seventh season,” said Sainz, who together with Leclerc (23) are the youngest Ferrari duo since 1968. “I have the skills to help the team return to the winning positions. Charles has already proven his worth. Two young drivers bring a lot of energy. ”
