Carbide shooters ‘accidentally’ damaged hotel in Joure | NOW

The twelve men who reported to the police on Friday after an incident with a carbide gun in Joure stated that this happened by accident. The carbide gun they were carrying went off at a hotel that was severely damaged by the impact.

The men (20 to 27 years old) said the cannon fired prematurely en route to a carbide shooting site. All windows of the hotel were destroyed, other buildings were also damaged and chaos ensued. The owners of the hotel are badly affected.

The twelve reported themselves together at the office on Friday. Eleven come from the municipality of De Fryske Marren, one from Heerenveen. They were questioned and were then allowed to go home, pending further steps.

“It speaks to their advantage that they came to report themselves,” said a police spokesman. It is not clear whether the suspects have already had contact with the hotel owners. The spokesperson cannot confirm that compensation has been offered, as reported by local media.

The cannon has been confiscated and destroyed.
