EU step closer to buying eighth corona vaccine
The European Commission (EC) has concluded exploratory talks with French pharmaceutical company Valneva about the potential purchase of their corona vaccine, the EC today. The European Union has negotiated to buy 30 million doses of the drug with an option for another 30 million doses.

The Valneva vaccine is currently still in the research phase, according to the manufacturer. If all goes well, the company hopes to submit the vaccine to the European medicines authority EMA for approval in the second half of the year.

Valneva is developing a vaccine based on a so-called inactivated virus. This is a traditional vaccine technology that has been used for sixty to seventy years and has a “high level of safety” according to the EC. This technology is also used for most flu vaccines and many childhood disease vaccines. It is the only (candidate) vaccine against COVID-19 in Europe based on this technique.

The EU has already concluded contracts for vaccines from AstraZeneca, Sanofi-GSK, Janssen Pharmaceutica, BioNTech / Pfizer, CureVac and Moderna. In addition, the EC has concluded talks with Novavax about the purchase of vaccines.
