The Belgian authorities report on Monday that an average of 5,750 new positive corona tests were reported per day in the past week. That is a decrease of 47 percent from a week earlier.
Virologist Steven Van Gucht of Sciensano, the Belgian equivalent of the RIVM, says Monday that the number of new positive tests is halving every eight days. The number of new hospital admissions halves every twenty days.
The drop in the number of new positive test results is greatest at 55 percent in Hainaut and Liège. These counties also recorded the most positive corona tests in the country last week. In Hainaut, an average of 899 corona infections per day were detected. In Liège there were 708.
There are currently 6,518 corona patients in a Belgian hospital, almost 1,000 fewer than during the presumed peak on 3 November. Last week, an average of 463 hospital admissions were reported per day. That is 22 percent less than a week earlier.
There are 1,419 corona patients in intensive care (ic). In these wards, a “slow but steady decline” has been observed in the last few days, says Van Gucht. Sciensano’s virologist says it appears that the plateau has been reached, so the ic peak was probably on Nov. 9.
Number of deaths did increase slightly
The number of corona-related deaths has increased slightly compared to a week earlier. Last week, an average of 197 deaths per day were reported, an increase of 7 percent. Van Gucht points out that the peak in the number of deaths was probably on November 6. On that day, two hundred people died from the effects of the corona virus.
Van Gucht says that Belgium is on the right track to bring curves down. According to Yves Stevens of the National Crisis Center, it is hopeful that the numbers of infections and admissions continue to fall. “We are on the right track, but it will be a long way”, he emphasizes.
For weeks, Belgium was in the top three of the EU list with the most established infections per 100,000 inhabitants. Thanks to strict measures, including a partial lockdown introduced at the end of October, the country has managed to contain the spread of the corona virus.
